Where To Begin? Try January.

Welcome to my memories of the 90's.

I will apologise in advance for any historical inaccuracies  that occur.  I will try my best to avoid these, but my starting point takes place when I was just 7 years old, so mistakes are likely.

UK Number 1 for two weeks in January 1990
So, the 1990's.  A lot happened during those 3,652 days.  That is equivalent to 87,624 hours, or 5,257,440 minutes or 315, 446,400 seconds.

January
The 1990's started on a monday.  Not the best start by any one's calculations.

If you lived in the UK, this was the number 1 record you were listening to at the time.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUoh-z28_Jw

Our Phil

However, if like me, you lived in the USA at the turn of the 90's, this was your song of choice.  The genius that is Phil.

Somehow feels strange that the UK charts were topped by a clean cut American Boy Band, and across the pond, our America friends were making babies to Chiswick's finest.

News
On that first day of 1990, a rather important event took place in New York City, that will have largely been forgotten.  David Dinkins became the first black mayor of the city.

The USA and Soviet Union were trying to get along, with some broadcasts from both Mikael Gorbachev and George Bush.

Manuel Noriega was hiding in Panama.

Over in Scotland, Glasgow was the European City of Culture.

Residents of Berlin were able to share the New Years celebrations together for the first time in nearly 30 years.

1990, Year of the horse in Japan
In Japan, it was cool to be a horse in 1990.

On January 2nd, we lost the "Skipper".  Alan Hale Jr. from Gilligan's Island sadly passed away.

Other notable deaths in January of 1990 were Ava Gardner and a man who owned a lot of Rolls Royce's.

To make up for this, we were given Jake Thomas.  He's no Skipper that's for sure.

Jerry Rice & Joe Montana

Sports
On January 28th, Super Bowl XXIV was won by the San Francisco 49ers who beat the Denver Broncos by 55 points to 10 in New Orleans, mainly because these two were quite good at throwing and catching.  Oh, and running.

Over in England, under fire Manchester United manager, Alex Ferguson saved his job by beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 in the FA Cup 3rd Round.

English clubs were still banned from competing in Europe due to the Heysel tragedy from 1985.

Fashion & TV
We couldn't dress in 1990, we simply wore denim.  Usually badly.

This group were the main offenders.
Beverly Hills 90210 - we all had our favourite.

Considering this look, It is hard to believe the man 4th from left, Brian Austin Green, is currently married to Megan Fox.  She was 3 years old at the start of 1990.Just at the end of 1989, this family made their first appearance.  Things changed forever.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UWgcNPNdeY

So, this is it for me today, a little taster of what there is to come.

Please let me know what you think or if you feel there are any special events you want featured in later blogs.

Cowabunga dudes.

  1. Loving the blog James. The 90s were weird like. In terms of requests for articles, I would like you to cover the assassination of Andres Escobar.

  2. Thank you Iain. It was your blog that inspired me to start this so I will of course look to cover the costliest own goal in history. The 90's fascinate me. It is only in the last 5 years that I have been able to objectively look back on that time and see the changes.
